🌏✨ Grand Opening of the 21st United Nations Day of Vesak Advancing “Buddhist Wisdom” for Global Sustainable Development Held in Wuxi, People’s Republic of China

Wuxi, People’s Republic of China (26 May 2026) — The 21st United Nations Day of Vesak was officially inaugurated in a grand ceremony in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, People’s Republic of China, under the theme "Buddhist Wisdom for Promoting Global Sustainable Development and Building a Shared Future for Humanity.” The event brought together senior Buddhist leaders, scholars, and representatives from more than 66 countries around the world to collaboratively promote the role of Buddhism in fostering world peace and sustainable development.
The opening ceremony commenced with Buddhist chanting dedicated to world peace, followed by the official inauguration amid a dignified and harmonious atmosphere. Participants were also captivated by a spectacular three-act cultural performance showcasing the richness of Buddhist civilization, arts, and cultural heritage through magnificent displays of light, sound, and artistic expression, leaving a profound impression on attendees from across the globe.
Most Venerable Phra Brahmawatcharatheeracharn, Prof. Dr., Rector of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University, stated that this year’s Vesak celebration serves as a significant international platform where Buddhist leaders from around the world can exchange knowledge, strengthen cooperation, and reaffirm the values of Buddhism in contributing to global peace. He further emphasized Thailand’s continuing and important role in promoting Buddhism on the international stage.
In addition, the International Council for Day of Vesak (ICDV) unanimously resolved to designate Thailand as the host country for the 22nd United Nations Day of Vesak in B.E. 2570 (2027), marking another important opportunity for Thailand to further disseminate Buddhist wisdom and values to the global community.
Associate Professor Dr. Suraphon Suyaphrom, Vice-Rector for General Affairs of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University, revealed that this year the University sent more than 100 administrators, faculty members, staff, and students to participate in the event in support of its longstanding mission in international Buddhist affairs, a commitment that has continued for over 21 years. The University is also actively preparing for its role as host of the next Vesak celebration in Thailand.
On this occasion, Phrakhrusamu Vachiravich Thitavangso, Dr., Director of IBSC, Asst. Prof. Dr. Phrasriwatcharasanbandit. Dean of the Faculty of Education and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chatchapol Chaiyaporn, Distinguished Committee Member of the International Buddhist Studies College (IBSC). Phramaha Somphong Khunakaro, Asst. Prof. Dr. Director for M.A. Religion and Philosophy and faculty members of the International Buddhist Studies College (IBSC) also participated in the opening ceremony, academic conferences, and various activities throughout the event. Their participation aimed to strengthen international Buddhist networks, exchange academic and cultural knowledge, and further promote the role of IBSC on the global stage.
The 21st United Nations Day of Vesak will continue through 28 May 2026, featuring international academic forums, scholarly discussions, and dialogue sessions dedicated to exploring pathways toward peace, sustainable development, and a shared future for humanity through the application of Buddhist principles and wisdom.
