Pilot Course on “Buddhism and Human Rights”
15 - 17 November 2024 (3-day course)

“Have you ever questioned the relationship between Buddhism and human rights?”
“Have you thought about whether the principles of human rights agree with Buddhist teachings?”
“Have you ever wondered whether the right to religious freedom or belief is possible?”

If you find yourself asking these questions, we would like to invite you to this 3-day course. The course will cover the following issues:
• Visions of a just society: Introduction to the Human Rights Declaration
• Visions of a just society: Buddhist models and frameworks
• Buddhism and human rights: Buddhist human rights?
• Contemporary Issues: Relevant Cases and Examples
• Excursion to learn more about the coexistence of different religions in the community

The lecturers are from the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights at the University of Oslo, the International Buddhist Studies University of MCU, and organisations working for human rights in Thailand.

Target:
20 - 25 participants

Participant Criteria:
1) English proficiency (4 skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking)
2) Graduated from or is studying at MA or PhD levels
3) Able to attend all 3 days of the course (no online applicable) from 08:00 AM to 18:00 PM, with a break.
4) Participants will be required to read about 500 pages of literature for the course.
5) Participants who submit a written essay of maximum 4000 words, including footnotes and reference list, will receive a certificate (the essay must be submitted 3 months after the course).
